Crookwell is a pastoral town, the administrative centre of the Upper Lachlan Shire, which is the birthplace of many famous Australians including Dame Mary Gilmore and Dame Mary Durack. The Country Women’s Association began in Crookwell, the Howard Rotary Hoe was invented in the district and Crookwell is now at the forefront of Wind Turbine technology. Crookwell is the home of the “Upper Lachlan Wool Wagon Award” which is an annual bush poetry competition held in November and supported by Australia’s champion bush poets, attracting interest Australia wide.
